The Entertainment Industry and its Influence on today’s Fashion Trends

Fashion trends are being heavily influenced by small screen style,Harper’s Bazaar’s writer Amy De Klerk said.

The entertainment industry has heavily influenced trends in fashion culture.

There are many factors as to why the entertainment industry substantially affects fashion. These factors include the pandemic, diversification of television and even the expansion of social media. The entertainment industry’s influence will only continue to grow as society continues to advance in terms of technology and entertainment.

From the early ’00s, movies such as “13 Going on 30,” “The Devil Wears Prada” and “Mean Girls” have inspired some of the most notable fashion trends in history. Strong fashion choices such as floral prints, bright red heels, elaborate makeup and shades of pink became popular from these films.

These staple fashion choices created what has become known as different aesthetics and fashion eras. Some examples of aesthetics that these iconic entertainment pieces have created are the “Baddie,” the “Soft Girl,” “Y2K,” and  “Streetwear.”

While those are early examples, there are apparent fashion choices made today that were significantly influenced from the movies and shows such as Bridgerton, Euphoria, Squid Games and the recent live-action Barbie Movie.

Bridgerton

Bridgerton is inspired by London’s high-class society and the fashion choices speak volumes to that time period. The theme of nobility and class is emphasized from the light pastel colors to the dress shapes.

Since being released, many spectators have tested these fashion choices in their personal lives. One iconic fashion choice that has reentered pop culture is corsets.

Corsets do not originate in American culture as they were more prevalent in British society; however, it has made its way into today’s fashion trends because of inclusive television program.

Euphoria

Euphoria is a staple television show that has been influencing fashion culture. Euphoria explores styles that fall under the “Baddie” aesthetic.

Main Characters such as Maddy and Cassie are often seen sporting stylish crop tops, matching sweatsuits, fun cheerleading uniforms, mini dresses and bold makeup looks.

The show was so influential that even the term, “Euphoria,” saw a peak in everyday language. Fashion inspiration can be influenced by words or even a collection of colors. Euphoria had a set of established colors that created the aesthetics that surround this show. These colors include deep purples, black and bold blues.

Barbie

The entertainment industry has such a strong influence on the fashion industry that movies can affect fashion culture before even being released.

The 2023 Live-Action version of Barbie, starring Margot Robbie, was released in July 2023. The promo activities, prerelease activities and even the activities surrounding the release had content creators flooding their wardrobes with mix-and-match outfits of all shades of pink. There have even been trending sounds on TikTok originating from the trailer that creators use to accompany their videos showcasing their elaborate Barbie-inspired wardrobes.
