The Black Storm Cheer Squad continues to twist, stomp and shake to make
their presence known at Kennesaw State University. Classified as a stomp-and-shake cheer team, The Black Storm Cheer Squad is separate from the Kennesaw
State Cheerleading team. Unlike a traditional cheer team, their cheers include
dance components in addition to traditional cheer elements. The all-gender inclusive
squad was founded in April 2021 by standing members Lanette Thompson, Mikayla
Thompson, Keiavia Kirkland, and Keyniah O’Neal. They currently only perform at
KSU’s home basketball games and other KSU-hosted events, but they plan to
perform at more sporting events in the near future.
In addition to sports, the squad also attends events outside of KSU. They recently
attended the Therrell High School college fair. The team was invited to talk to
the high schoolers about how to be more involved at KSU and what The Black Storm
Cheer Squad is all about. Later in the event, they had the opportunity to
perform for the students to show them firsthand what they could do. The active
head coach for the Black Storm Cheer Squad, Aimee Brown, is a KSU alumna and a
former cheerleader. When the founders of the squad came up with the initial
concept of a stomp-and-shake cheer team, they didn’t know where to start. They created
an Instagram page to promote
the idea, and Brown reposted their page, insinuating she wanted to be their
coach. Not too long after, the founders reached out to her and she became the
coach of KSU’s first stomp and shake cheer team. The Black Storm Cheer Squad
has made history by being accepted as part of Cheer Phi Incorporated here at
KSU as of Jan. 21, 2022, Head Captain Aimee Brown said. The following members
have been accepted as charter members: Aimee Brown, Kirsten Gobert, Angela
Hyman, Keiavia Kirkland, Yonee Smith and Ashley Williams. To find out more
