Local Music Spotlight: An interview with Indie band, Equal Creatures in the Atlanta DIY music scene.

The Atlanta area is home to a thriving DIY music scene with dozens of active bands. There is a broad range of styles represented and produced under the DIY ethos. DIY ethos is the idea of homespun expression of real people working to create music and produce shows themselves within their community. It’s inherently for the common people, a belief that anyone can do it yourself whether it be art, music or create a thriving community.

Local music can seem daunting at first to engage-in. Shows can feel impossible to find because bands are constantly popping up for short periods of time; however, despite the perceived difficulty for beginners, the shows are filled with great local bands once found.

At DIY shows, the bands on the bill are from the Atlanta area. These smaller shows exemplify the relationship between the audience and players. Before and after their sets, band members come onto the floor and join the dancing. I sat down with Laura Wilson of Equal Creatures to discuss the band and the local DIY scene.

This conversation has been edited for length and clarity.

How would you classify your music?

Sad Indie girl rock.

What makes local music unique?

It is such a special thing. I love going to shows, but there’s something about local shows that are so intimate like you meet people just through the scene. You see the same faces. In between sets you just chill with your friends. When you’re playing you have friends and people there who know and support your music. You know they will get it compared to bigger shows.

Is there a sense of community in a scene?

Absolutely. You see a lot of the same faces and you have friends there and everyone singing along. I’m in a kind of transitional period of my life and the scene has really helped me during this time. While playing the people are right up on you and it is like having a big conversation or a big party.

What are your favorite venues to play and to see shows?

My favorite shows I have played and sounded the best are at 529, the Earl, Terminal West and The Bon House. The Bon House is actually someone’s mid-century modern house in a neighborhood. They are sponsored by and receive free Pabst Blue Ribbon beer.

What are some local ATL bands to check out?

I really like Mallbangs, Nihilist Cheerleader, Tourneforte, and Divestar who’s a great live band.

So is this your first album? The EP came out last year. How has the sound evolved?

It’s all of our first album. Yeah, the EP was recorded last year and it was very different. It was very quick and recorded without a lot of money. The album now has the keys/synths which fill out the sound and add a new atmosphere.

Any advice, or other words about starting a band?

It’s all about networking and making sure to put yourself out there.
