These encouraging characteristics should not just be anticipated at music festivals, but implemented into daily lifestyles outside of the scene.
A common stigma that surrounds the majority of music festivals is the portrayal of a “no rules” zone accompanied with pretty lights and strangers. As for the pretty lights, absolutely! The incredible light and remarkable stage production conducted by dozens of talented visual jockeys at multiple festivals is what makes it a part of the experience. Allowing yourself to enter an area where the attendees, the music and strobe lights are all synchronized pivots the mindset into a state of unity. The kindness aspect that surrounds music festivals ultimately debunks the popular “no rules” portrayal. The only rule is kindness; specifically, music festival traditions practice P.L.U.R — Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect. The more individuals that learn this custom, the more it’ll immerse and spread a refined image around the culture.
To highlight a recent occurrence at this year’s EDC Las Vegas — a three day festival that generates over 50,000 attendees a year — one woman who attended went into a six-week early labor during a late-night set. Immediately needing medical attention, a crowd full of people who had no idea who the woman was did not hesitate to alert medical personnel and assist in any way possible with blankets and water to ensure the mother and baby’s health were not compromised. Shocking moments like these can happen and when they do, everybody around who witnesses it moves with haste because these actions are based around the practice of P.L.U.R. and reflects the festival communities’ reputation. This speaks volumes: a gaggle of strangers who are sharing a similar interest in EDM worked in congruence to guarantee somebody’s safety and still managed to have a safe, fun time themselves. It’s unlikely one would find themselves helping a woman in labor at a local Publix, per se; however, instances like these are not impossible outside of music festivals. Incorporating these traditional elements of the culture into everyday life can bring joy, memories and an open mindset that are influential to yourself and others.
Although music festivals are notorious for being an environment meant to briefly escape from personal or worldly issues, some circumstances aren’t always avoidable. In recent news, a California-based music festival called “Beyond Wonderland” unfortunately faced a mass shooting killing two individuals and injuring a few more. Devastated by the news, the festival’s organizers and the collective community recognized the lives lost and raised funds through GoFundMe to help contribute to the medical bills of the injured and funeral services for the departed. It is extremely disheartening to know that some who attended the festival with the intents of being in a freeing and safe environment were fearful for their lives. To help avert from the influx of tragic news, many individuals on social media apps like Twitter continue to share news updates about the victims and urge all to express heartfelt condolences to those affected. Ultimately, all-embracing moments in celebratory or tragic times is what the community thrives on.
Acceptance is a factor that most, if not all, EDM music festivals represent. Electric Daisy Carnival, held by Insomniac Events since 1993, expresses their motto “All Are Welcome Here.” Insomniac strives to produce various state of the art music festivals that feature artwork and immersive experiences all while encouraging versatile people from anywhere to be the most authentic version of themselves. Heavily advocating a culture fostered by environments that encourage unique self-expression, it’s extremely normal to find Insomniac attendees uplift others who may have a disability or aren’t entirely able-bodied. Giving those with disadvantages of any sort the exact same immersive experience of fun, high energized involvement accompanied with spirited high-fives and heartfelt compliments is something that should be more normalized.
These moments hold important value to individuals who would like to attend, but are hesitant because of the surrounding anxiety of “fitting-in” to the general crowd. Acceptance should be implemented just as much outside of the scene. Theoretically speaking, perhaps a handicapped individual who is using a wheelchair is interested in participating in an event but may face certain physical barriers. To ensure inclusivity and make the person feel welcomed, one might take the time to listen attentively to the individual, showing genuine interest in their experiences and challenges without pitying or patronizing them. This demonstrates that you value their perspective and understand their unique circumstance; fundamentally, the basis of acceptance is constantly reiterated amidst music festivals. Outside of the scene, acceptance should be implemented just as much.
The culture that surrounds EDM music festivals should be refined, recognized and executed in lifestyles outside of that realm. Reasons like the overwhelming amounts of acceptance, love, kindness and inclusivity are why the community continues to grow in numbers. Atmospheres created by Insomniac and other festival organizers develop safe spaces catered to all, regardless of ability, age or personal orientation. Given these practices went into effect as a society, the energetic nature of EDM culture could permeate these aspects to the general public by influencing art, fashion, entertainment and social interactions. People would have more opportunities to connect with others who share their love for EDM, forming new friendships and networks.
