[Film Review] Deadpool

The must-see movie of Valentine’s day weekend – no, the must-see action movie of the whole month of February – is Deadpool. It took nearly 10 years to make this film happen and it was well worth the wait. Deadpool delivers one of the best Marvel movies to date. Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds), a former Special Forces Op turned mercenary, finds a raunchy and beautiful lover in Vanessa Carlysle (Morena Baccarin), and falls in love with “someone who can match his ’crazy.’”  Wade falls ill with cancer but finds a strange facility that claims they can cure his cancer.  His world crumbles away as he goes into the facility thinking they can cure his cancer, but they give him a treatment that not many would call pleasant and legal, transforming him forever.

The Deadpool movie stays true to Deadpool’s comic book roots, frequently breaking through the fourth wall or making brash jokes which gives it a well-deserved R rating that the fans are very thankful for. His best friend, Weasel (T.J. Miller), helps him along the way and runs the bar that the ‘dead pool’ betting system is run in.

Everything about this movie is perfect, from a comic book fan’s perspective. The pacing never slows down, with joke after joke, and action scene after action scene. The cinematography is perfect from the opening scene, which pokes fun at the normal attributions of director, main actors, and production team. The movie is full of nonstop jokes, brilliantly choreographed fight scenes and hilarious jabs at Ryan Reynolds’ previous movies. There is also a jibe at the studio itself when Deadpool goes to the X-Mansion, because they could “only afford two X-Men:” Colossus (Stefan Kapicic) and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand). The music is beautifully woven into scenes to fit the tone and style of each scene.  Also, don’t forget to stay for the two after-credit scenes!

Deadpool gets 5 out of 5 stars. It is a must-see, and the first movie in a line of big hits coming out this year.
