After all of the events published on the original checklist of the March: Geek Week issue, I was only able to attend five of them (all on the Marietta campus). Here are my reviews based on the event service, food, fun level, and interactivity.
Pie a Professor/President:
Monday, 3/14 from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. in the Marietta Student Center Globe
This event is an annual pie throwing fundraiser hosted by Society of Women Engineers (SWE). There were several professors that volunteered to be pied, which led to a successful event for SWE as they raised over $130 towards their student organization funds.
Attendance: 20+
Pie Walk:
Monday, 3/14 from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. in the Marietta Student Center Lobby
Free t-shirts and pizza? Typical, but worth it every time. I mean, who can say no to free clothes and food? The red Pi Day t-shirts given out this year were cleverly designed and distributed by the Department of Student Life. The pizza and pi-shaped cookies were provided by KSU Catering and turned out to be delicious.
Attendance: 73
Robot Demonstration & Bacon Reception:
Tuesday, 3/15 from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. in the Q Lobby on the Marietta campus
Thanks to Mechatronics Engineering and Student Life, this was another successful event for the week. They served mac & cheese bacon bowls, chicken-wrapped bacon, pineapple-wrapped bacon, bacon quesadillas, bacon maple cookies, and even bacon corn muffins. Of course, with free food comes free t-shirts, which were designed as black Geek Week shirts that said “The Geek Awakens,” a reference to the most recent Star Wars movie.
Attendance: 132
Marvel Movie Night:
Tuesday, 3/15 at 7:00 p.m. in the Q building, Room 202 on the Marietta campus
This was another event hosted by SWE. The film played was Age of Ultron, a Marvel movie about a dormant peacekeeping program gone wrong. The fate of the Earth hangs as the Avengers battle Ultron, a technological terror hell-bent on human extinction and evolution. This event was hosted in an auditorium with surround sound speakers, popcorn, candy, pizza, and soft drinks.
Attendance: 20
Drag Show:
Thursday, 3/17 from 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. in the Marietta Student Center Theater
One of the most fun-filled events of the week was the Drag Show hosted by Kennesaw Pride Alliance (KPA) to raise money for Lost-n-Found Youth (LNFY), a nonprofit organization dedicated to taking homeless lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth off the streets and into more permanent housing. They serve as an advocate and service to youth from 13 to 25 years old. KPA worked hard to put together this event since the semester started to showcase some of the student talent we have. They were able to raise over $1,000 with the support of students, faculty, staff, and guests.
